Misery Index @ Fubar

Last Tuesday night 3/2 was probably one of the best grind/death metal concerts I have been to in a long time. Misery Index and Magrudergrind played a show at the Fubar here in St. Louis and boy was that a treat. There were a few locals that opened up the show, none too spectacular though the first band’s singer wore overalls as did I think one other person in the band. The openers weren’t terrible though I mean I did actually enjoy some of them, but for me the show started when Misery Index drummer Adam Jarvis played with his other band, All Will Fall. Now I had only heard stories about this band up until this night, never heard anything by them and holy crap if they weren’t one of the best local Death/Grind/Thrash metal bands then I don’t know who is. For those of you unfamiliar Adam Jarvis of Misery Index is actually a local from just across the river from Troy, IL. Back on track, so being unfamiliar with the works of All Will Fall I stood there and watched in amazement, just watching Jarvis drum just as fast if not faster at times than he does in some Misery Index songs was astonishing! AWF is Adam Jarvis on Drums, his brother John on bass, Gabe Smick on Guitars and Backing Vocals, Adam Tripp on Vocals, and Josh Gamboa on Guitar. You can check some of their music out on myspace.com/allwillfall. After they plowed through their set of about 6 songs round one for Adam was over. The set was as follows:

  1. Blackout
  2. Antique
  3. Overflow
  4. Onslaught
  5. Brickshard Foundery
  6. To the Head

Up next was D.C. Grindcore band Magrudergrind, again being unfamiliar with their work prior to the show aside from having checked their myspace to know they were worth checking out, I really wanted to watch as they thrashed about on stage. But the crowd wasn’t letting me just stand there as they broke into a mass mosh pit/Thrash Dancing or whatever that was, and who can blame them really it was a brutal set, giving you every reason to let loose! The awesome part about these guys is that they are a 3 piece band consisting of a singer, guitar player and drummer but listening to their albums you wouldn’t think that at all. So I ended up getting their set list but since I don’t know the full names to all their songs I will just post them as they are written:

  1. Protocals
  2. V6 (or VC, VG)
  3. Fuck Done
  4. 2 Step
  5. Empires
  6. Emo
  7. Bridge Burn
  8. Gorguts
  9. Layer
  10. Ex Com
  11. Doom
  12. Heretics
  13. Burden

At the end of their set the guitarist smashed his guitar and threw it against the wall as he walked off stage. All in all killer set and if they come back check them out and be sure to take money, their merch is cheap and awesome! Got to talk to a couple of the guys, really nice guys actually so if you get the chance to, go talk to them. Now for what we were all there for Misery Index.

Round 2 for Mr. Jarvis. I have seen Misery Index a few times and they always seem to deliver more and more with each show. With half of them being from St. Louis area it makes for a much crazier show, you get all their die hard fans as well as a mix of new comers adds for an experience of many possible outcomes, but always ends up in a good time. Now seeing as Adam’s first set ended just under an hour before his set with Misery Index I wasn’t sure what to expect 1) because I didn’t know All Will Fall was yet another Thrash/Grind band and 2) I had never really seen a Death/Thrash/Grind drummer do 2 sets before, especially this close to each other. But man he and the rest of the band were dead on and more brutal than ever before. This was by far my favorite Misery Index show, it was more intimate and brutal as hell, no holds barred anything was possible. They even played a couple tracks from their new album “Heirs To Theivery” which were fast, insane and without doubt some of the best Misery Index tunes to date, you definitely won’t be disappointed with this release. Some of the hilights for me was watching them crush through tracks like ‘Traitors’, ‘We Come In Peace/Theocracy’, ‘Conquistadores’ and title track to the new album ‘Heirs To Theivery’ (warning this song is fast as all hell, be prepared to smash faces). During the set I had the opportunity to talk with Momma Jarvis and one of the sisters I believe it was Ashley? Regardless they were both very nice ladies, and were excited to see some of the pictures I had taken. Which to those of you reading head over to the Facebook site to check out the folder I will be putting up of the show later today! Here is their set:

  1. The Great Depression
  2. Defector
  3. We Never Come In Peace
  4. Theocracy
  5. Partisans of Grief
  6. Ruling Class Canceled
  7. Embracing Extinction
  8. Manufacturing Greed
  9. Pandemican
  10. Heirs to Thievery
  11. Conquistadors
  12. Traitors

All in all it was an amazing show, I was glad I could be there to cover it. If this tour comes anywhere close to you I highly recommend going and take some cash there was tons of sick merch to be purchaced from both bands, including the newly released MI Compilation “Pulling Out The Nails” featuring 30 non ablum songs from their EPs, Splits, 7″, etc. definitely worth it.
