Album Review: Gomorrah – The Haruspex

The Haruspex

Band: Gomorrah
Album: The Haruspex
Record Label: Test Your Metal Records
Release Date: January 15, 2016

Up until recently, I thought Gomorrah was a pretty original name for a metal band. Well I was quickly denied that excitement when I found out there were in fact SEVERAL bands named Gomorrah, at least enough to fit into one hand. That being said, this version of the band hail from Kelowna, British Columbia (our upstairs neighbors to the United States, right above Washington). Now that the geography lesson is over, I have no idea what the other bands with this name sound like, in fact I was super excited when I saw that Gomorrah was coming to town this year (wrong band, less excited). Our good friend Jon Asher hooked us up with this album and upon first listen I heard influences from Behemoth, Cannibal Corpse and Morbid Angel.

The Haruspex is one of those albums you listen to and it feels like you are being shredded from the inside out, just look at the cover it speaks for itself. So minus the fact that the entire album is brutal as all hell, there are a handful of tracks that stand out amongst the rest. ‘Carcosa’ is the first one to really catch my ears. It has that erie feeling Vildhjarta puts into their songs that makes you feel like someone is watching you and then cuts you into teeny tiny pieces and serves you to the nearest vulture. Yes it is that brutal! ‘Sitra Achra’ comes at you like a full terror assault, not to be confused with the U.S. Open Air Metal Festival, but this track will leave you left for dead with out a care in the world. One thing I have come to realize while listening to this album, the songs are very short. Much like listening to Veil of Maya you rarely have time to get into the song/album and the next thing you know its over. It transfers well live, but if you are on a road trip that can get irritating fast. That said the last two songs that really stand out to me are ‘Crowns of Flesh’ and ‘Venom and Rapture’ each of these songs project the bands sound.

This is the second album from the B.C. Trio and I can already tell that they mean business. I don’t know what’s in the water of Kelowna, but it seemed to produce a monster and its name is Gomorrah! Be on the look out for these guys, for I could see them doing big things in their future. All it takes is that one big leap from the band and they will be splattered on the walls of countless upcoming metal heads in retaliation to their parents!

The Haruspex is due out through Test Your Metal Records this coming Friday, January 15, 2016. Check them out on Bandcamp at:

Rating: 3.5/5 (There’s just something about songs that don’t end abruptly or that could use one more verse that holds me back)

Venom and Rapture
The Mark of Veritas
