My Missing Half is a four piece melodic death metal band from Boston, Massachucets, founded in 2011. The band consists of Bijan Hennessey on vocals and guitar, Alex Elwell on bass and John Matthews on drums. They released their powerful debut album The Lives That I Ruined on May 3rd of 2014 and two years, one month and a week later have returned with A Proper Hangman’s Knot which is set to be released June 10th 2016. Pat Powers contributed to the guitars on all the songs (however left the band on good terms to focus on his job and marriage) and the album was recorded by Jay Maas (founding member of Defeater. producer for Defeater, Vanna, Bane) and Daniel Flores at Getaway Recording, produced by Jay Maas.

The first track wastes absolutely no time showing what these guys are capible of. My first reaction was that it instantly reminded me of a mixture of Through The Eyes Of The Dead and Gojira. As I continued to listen, not only did I realize how accurate that statement was in my head, but more bands kept adding on to that list. While reminding me of other bands and letting their influences shine through their creativity, they keep their unique sound that is My Missing Half.

One thing that I love and appreciate about this album is that it unfolds like a book. There are moments that make you get lost in your own world, then when you least expect it there are moments that snap you out of it and make you feel complete, as if you’re taking a breath of fresh air. The way that the songs are written and the order that they’re in is perfect and I couldn’t imagine it any other way. I’m sure this was planned, but it is note-worthy because it’s done very well.

This album may only consist of only five tracks, but this is a perfect example of quality over quanity. I can’t speak for everyone but I would much rather hear 5 great tracks rather than 10 sloppy recordings of nonsense. This album is the exact opposite that. I highly suggest checking out their single “The Cell I Call Home” which is the first track off of A Proper Hangman’s Knot which will be available for purchase on iTunes June 10th 2016.

Rating:  4.5/5

RIYL: Through The Eyes Of The Dead, The Black Dahlia Murder, Children of Bodom, In Flames, At the Gates, Gojira, Dark Tranquility, As Blood Runs Black, Insomnium, Darkest Hour, Between the Buried and Me, and Machine Head.
